Two weeks ago a number of people from Lake Forest joined God’s mission and ventured out all over Mecklenburg County to love and serve the people of this county as a part of the first week of the missio Dei Summer Tour.
We partnered with a number of local agencies (Love INC, Urban Ministry Center, Ada Jenkins, Charlotte Rescue Mission, Angels and Sparrows, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Salvation Army Center of Hope, The Bin) and our sister church Faith Liberation Church to show the love of Christ through service.
One of the LFC tour participants and an Urban Plunge alum, after visiting the Urban Ministry Center and visiting with a few of the homeless neighbors, wrote the following…
“Hello friends, I had the opportunity to visit Urban Ministries again yesterday. It is just an amazing place. We had the pleasure of just sitting with two neighbors in a small comfortable setting and just talking. Both gentlemen, like our friend Gary [a formerly homeless neighbor], they were high functioning & willing to talk frankly about anything we asked. Speaking of Gary, they said that he is off the streets and out of the shelters and is in the scattered housing program!!
Thank you Lord for Urban Ministries and all they do. Thank you for taking our friend, Gary, off the streets. It is my prayer for Gary to continue down the path that you, God, have for him. For you to give him the strength, inner peace and contentment to be able to walk away from the day-to-day distractions and temptations that he and the others are faced with. God, use Gary as an example to the neighbors, and all those he encounters. Help them see that anything is possible through you, and that you, our loving God, is always with them – and with us.”
We heard many other “God stories,” including this one: A team of LFC tour participants was hard at work at Faith Liberation Church in north Charlotte on the last morning of the week. They were painting the outside of the church when someone noticed a man had literally joined in off the streets. With an abscess in his mouth, he was walking to a nearby store to pick up something for the pain. But when he noticed the LFC team in action, he walked right up and asked for paint and brush. Didn’t ask, at first, what the team was up to, or even if they needed any help. Like Isaiah, responding to God’s call for a servant, he simply said, “Here I am.”
