Friday Night Life is a time set aside each week by Good Works to celebrate God sharing life, relationship, and food with people. Usually about 100 - 120 people from all over Athens, OH come to share a good time. On any given Friday night at Good Works you will find people from all walks of life. From people on a work retreat like us to those experiencing poverty. Oh yes... and God definitely shows up too.
God shows up in conversations and new relationships. After the dinner, the work retreat members, interns, and staff members meet for a debriefing to discuss what the week has meant to them. During that meeting there were countless stories of God showing up. The bizarre thing (or not so bizzare) is it was easy to find something in common with most of the people we met and God showed up all over the place.
The people we "served" in Athens truly served us as we learned about their situations. We also learned something that I would consider the most important. People come first. When you label someone "homeless" or "poor" it is a sentence. It sounds so permenant. When you put people first and even change the language to reflect that it makes a difference. "Homeless" becomes "people experiencing homelessness" and "poor" becomes "people experiencing poverty". It turns a sentence into an event AND it puts people first.
What a rich time God has sewed into our lives this week. Hard to believe that tomorrow we are leaving.
Thank you. Thank you for sending us to learn so much about ourselves and the people of Athens, OH. You made God's good work possible.
In The Faith,
P.S. Pics and videos will keep pouring in for a day or two. Give us a moment to get them on the blog so we can share. That means... keep coming back to see what we're up to.
